Mature red wines are fragile, and their bouquet should be protected from over-exposure to the air after opening. White wines have delicate, subtle aromas that will escape if overly exposed to air. Therefore, a decanter with a long, narrow neck and slightly bowed base minimizes the oxygenation, preserving the bouquet while enhancing the wine's color.  Higher-quality wines and fragile, older wines are best served using a decanting cradle. By holding the wine bottle in a semi-horizontal position, the wine and its sediment can be separated for serving.
